  • Volcanic products of the shallow ocean floor that were formed in the early phase of history of the Taga Volcano

Cliffs of Uomizaki offer a view of volcanic products that were formed in the early phase of activity of Taga Volcano, one of the large terrestrial volcanoes of the area. These cliffs are strata formed by lava that flowed to the ocean floor, and the explosive volcanic eruption (phreatomagmatic eruption) caused by water and magma coming into contact with each other.

These cliffs show that the Taga Volcano (formed mainly by volcanic products of terrestrial eruption) actually has its origins on the shallow ocean floor.

Some parts of lava in Uomisaki are red, thus showing that they flowed on land and were burned by coming into contact with air. This clearly proves the fact that the land was not so far away at the time.
Under the cliffs towering on the coast there are marine-cut terraces, notches, and sea caves carved by the waves. Tourists visit these places frequently and enjoy the view of the sea.
