Koura 33 Kannons

  • Volcanic products of submarine volcanoes and stone statues of the Buddha


    If you walk about 5 minutes from the Koura Port along the Hiyoriyama trail you will find a group of statues of deities. These figures are referred to as “The 33 Kannons (Goddesses of Mercy)”.

    In the strata behind the 33 Kannons, you can see rocks with a special characteristic. These are rocks that cooled very quickly from an eruption.

Safety information
The trail is very steep , and in many places goes right along the edge of the cliff. Marks of erosion are noticeable in the basin where the 33 Kannons stand and visitors need to be very careful of falling rocks.
Access
You can reach the location by taking the Tokai bus bound for Koura from the Izukyu-Shimoda Station of the Izu Kyuko Line to the last stop (50 minutes) and from there it is 10 minutes by foot.

Parking information
There is a pay parking lot right next to the beach. The capacity of the lot is 150 standard-sized cars and the parking cost is 1,000 yen per day.
