Shimoshiraiwa

  • Calcareous sandstone

Shimoshiraiwa is a large calcareous rock which yields many fossils of small marine organisms. These fossils are an indication that these strata accumulated in a much southerly location than its present location, in the South Pacific approximately 11 million years ago.

The extracted fossils are exhibited at the Nakaizu Rekishi Minzoku Shiryokan (Nakaizu History and Folklore Resource Center) nearby.
