Publishing a Guidebook for Geo Guides: “Guidelines for Geo Guiding for School Education” – Higher Quality Guides for Children –

2022.08.19

The Geopark Promotion Department of the Izu Peninsula Geopark and Tourism Bureau has compiled a guidebook "Guidelines for Geo-Guiding for School Education," which was edited by the Education Committee of the former Izu Peninsula Geopark Promotion Council, and the first presentation meeting for certified geo-guides will be held on August 24, 2022. The guidebook is expected to serve as a reference for certified geoguides to conduct classes on elementary science or integrated learning at schools. The book will be distributed not only to geo guides, but also to boards of education in the region and other geoparks.

The above-mentioned Education Committee was aware of necessity for different approaches between guiding for the general public and organising activities at schools. This is because using technical terms of geography and earth science will merely lead children to superficial understanding them. To overcome this difficulty, the Committee tried to reflect the practical insight accumulated by the certified geoguides so far.
This A4-sized booklet consists of 76 pages in total, with chapters 1 to 4, and includes the flow of course implementation, points to note, follow-up methods, etc.
This book describes some practical cases. For example, during fieldwork in Dogashima (Nishiizu-cho), when a child says, "It's interesting that a magnet sticks to a rock!," it is recommended for the guide to proceed the study while enjoying communications with the child without using difficult words.
