What is a Geopark?

Perspectives from the Earth and from humans

Celebrating greeneries lives, and taking a natural hot spring, taking delicious dishes, taking a look of the ocean… We can live everyday under the environment we take for granted in the Izu Peninsula. We are wondering whether we will be able to live with the blessed nature for eternity? It can be happened, sometime, that the natural environments will be damaged by human ignorance. Too profound for human intellect Earth’s ability manifestation such as earthquake or volcanic eruption, typhoon hit, can be changed sceneries of Izu drastically.
The nature locates right in front of our eyes is nothing more than one scene of Earth’s massive pursuit. Even if we will live on the one scene of this beautiful Earth, We, humans will be able to make our livelihood for generations.

We, people live in this Izu Peninsula, our mission is that accession of this one scene of this beautiful Earth to the following generations. For this direction, we focus on the Earth, the basement of our daily life, and introduce the concept of UNESCO Global Geoark, “sustainable local community” so that we are able to manage local communities continuously.

What is a Geopark?

“Geopark” is one of the UNESCO led program together with the other two site designations Biosphere Reserves and World Heritage Sites. Geopark is the area which includes sites of international geological significance and managed under the holistic concept of protection, education and sustainable development. Geopark, which protecting significant geological heritage, encourages sustainable development of local communities through utilization it in the field of environmental education or geotourism.
